01. LEC052018. A Comparison between Joji and Macbeth

A Comparison between Joji and Macbeth

Joji is a 2021 Malayalam movie inspired from English playwright; William Shakespeare’s the renowned tragedy called Macbeth (1606). While the play portrays the tragic life of a brave Scottish general named Macbeth, the film depicts the unsuccessful and gruesome life of Joji. Both the movie and film, give us an incredible vision on how greed and power corrupts the life of human beings. By focusing on the plot and characters , this essay is trying to make a comparative analisis between the play Mancbeth and the movie Joji.

In fact, there are number of film adaptations of Shakespeare's play Macbeth across the world and Joji is considered to be one of the latest film adaptation of this play. Actually Joji, an engineering dropout, along with elder brothers Jomon and Jaison, sister-in -law Bincy and Jomon’s teenage son Popy, lead a life of fear under their dominating father Kuttappan. All of them were leading their lives by depending on Kuttappan who was wealthy and has no faith in his own children. Because of his unsuccessful ventures, Joji is financially dependent on Kuttappan who is physically abusive of him. Later Kuttappan became ill and except Jomon, others at various levels hope for a speedy death of Kuttappan so that they can inherit.

In contrast, by seeing the recovery of their father, Joji decides to kill him by secretly replace Kuttappan's daily medication with similar looking pills. This is witnessed by Bincy who does not reveal the truth as she and her husband too secretly wish for Kuttappan's death. Joji's plan works and Kuttappan dies soon. Here the murder of Kuttappan have some similarities to the murder of King Duncan. Macbeth killed his King for gaining power and wealth as well as Joji kills his father by foreseeing the wealth and freedom that he will be acquiring soon after the death of his father.

Meanwhile rumors begin to spread about Kuttappan’s death and Joji has nightmares of his father as Macbeth had in the play. But Bincy’s silence give confidence to Joji. This attitude of Bincy proves that she shares some common features with the character of Lady Macbeth. Where as the behavior of Jomon is closely connected with Banquo, since Jomon was upset in the death of his father as Banquo’s agony in the death of his King.

In contrast, in the play Macbeth does regicide where as in the film, Joji does both patricide and fratricide for acquiring wealth and property from his father. At the end Macbeth killed by Macduff, while in the film Joji make an attempt to suicide blaming the society for his present condition.

In conclusion, even though the story of the film is inspired from the play Macbeth, there are lot of similarities and differences between these two genres in its relationship among characters and the plot. But both the play and film trying to portray how greed and power corrupt the life of human beings.
